Ramadan Nights: Islam in Jerusalem

In the nighttime hours during the holy month of Ramadan, Jerusalem buzzes with renewed energy as the Muslim community goes from the exhaustion that comes with abstaining from food and drink during the day to the joy and revelry of the celebratory evenings when families and friends gather for the evening festivities and iftar meal.

We will finish the evening with an up-close, exclusive look at the old city’s Muslim Quarter during a nighttime tour with Husam Jubran, our good friend and an expert, Palestinian tour-guide who will introduce us to some of the rich cultures that define this unique neighborhood, and the stories told in its alleyways.

For the better part of 1300 years, various Muslim empires – from the Ummayads to the Ottomans – controlled Jerusalem and the surrounding region. Now, we will have the special opportunity to enrich our understanding of the city’s rich Islamic past through the festivities of this important holy month for many of Jerusalem’s residents.
