Wadi Akrabim – the Scorpions Stream – gets it’s name from the adjacent Roman ascent that was used throughout antiquity and up through the British Mandate as a major access route between the Arava Valley and Mediterranean Sea. As you will see, the ascent and stream resemble the whip of the scorpion’s tail!
The hike is a semi-strenuous trek through the riverbed and surrounding cliffs and offers beautiful views in all directions of the Negev. It’s also a great way to learn about the area’s important history throughout the record of the Holy Land. Hiking through Wadi Akrabim is a great way to get familiar with the land of the craters – ארץ המכתשים – and this unique geological phenomenon that only exists in our region.
Hiking around the northeastern Negev is a great way to understand the proportions within Israel and gain a better geographical understanding of the region bridging the deep valleys of the Arava with the high plateaus of the Negev.
