TRIP OVERVIEW

Last year was not easy on some of us so let’s greet the new one by celebrating the things we love: waking up very early, hiking steep ascents, watching the sunrise, and drinking cold beer before noon!

After driving during the night to the Jordan Valley, we will start the hike before dawn, climbing the area’s highest point – the illustrious Sartaba (Alexandrium) – and winding our way through the quiet valleys that define the landscape.

Sartaba is the second location for the beacons that announced the beginning of the month, starting from the temple in Jerusalem, all the way to Babylon and is a wonderful symbol for greeting the new year.

The site is named after the Hasmonean King, Alexander Janneaus, and eventually became a stronghold for the megalomaniacal King Herod. Here, we will delve into the family drama and soap opera that surrounded these prominent historical figures.

Spoiler alert: this is a MAJOR ASCENT: a steep 30-45 minutes.

After sunrise we will descend back to the bus and drive to Ein el-Ouja – a rare oasis in the Jordan valley – for a refreshing morning dip.

Heading up to the mountains through a beautiful scenic road called “Tarek Abu George”, we will visit the famous Taybeh brewery – the first in the Palestinian territories – located in the ancient, Palestinian Christian village of Taybeh. The brewery produces a number of delicious beers and has a fascinating story to compliment the fine taste!

* Tickets are sold for 199 NIS (early sale tickets will be sold for 179 NIS.)
