Mar Saba Monastery and the Hyrcania Valley (Feb. 27th)

Meeting Time:06:00

Completion Time: 20:00

When Saint Sabbas made his way from Cappadocia to the holy land in the later 5th century, he chose the slopes of the Kidron Valley to establish his place of refuge and spiritual solitude. The northern Judean Desert has been a place of refuge and spiritual discovery for thousands of years while maintaining a close connection to nearby Jerusalem, and there is no better place to explore this fascinating history than the same monastery built by Saint Sabbas over 1500 years-ago – Mar Saba Monastery.

The hike will start at Keidar near Ma’ale Adumim and take us for a full day through the Kidron Valley and finishing up in the Hyrcania Valley, the possible burial site of one of the most mysterious treasures in history – the treasures of Jerusalem’s great temple! We will also explore the ruins of the famous Hyrcania Fortress, one of three fortresses built by the Hasmonean king and Maccabean descendent, John Hyrcanus.

Even if we don’t find the treasure, we will find ourselves high above the Dead Sea on Jabal Muntir (Mount Azalzel), the identified site where the chosen goat would be cast way during biblical times, carrying with him the sins of the Israelites.
