‘Darom Adom’: Flowers, WWI & Geopolitics in the Western Negev

Finjan is taking a special Friday (Shabbat friendly) trip to the Western Negev to experience the famous ‘Darom Adom’ – the sea of Anemones (flowers) covering the area along the Gaza Strip. The visit will also cover the area’s importance in WWI while touching on the complex political situation surrounding the Gaza border communities.

What does it mean when the south of Israel is red? The meaning ‘darom adom’ – literally, the ‘red south’, has a number of connotations. The most famous refers to the beautiful Anemones in bloom for a few weeks mid-Winter. However, the meaning also conjures both historical and contemporary military and political implications.

Our visit will center around the flowers, but behind all beauty lies a more profound existence and contextual significance. Along the way, we will touch on the 100 year anniversary of the WWI battles in the Western Negev and the complex geopolitical situation unfolding on the border with the Gaza Strip. The famous ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Army Corps) memorial lies just a few hundred meters from the Gaza Strip.

Time permitting, we will also visit the famous ‘Hill of the Journalists’ in Sderot with a perfect view of the northern Gaza Strip. The plan is also to eat lunch (not included) in Netivot at one of the best Tunisian, home-cooking spots in the country.
