Herodion and Rachel’s Tomb

Meeting Time:07:30

Completion Time: 15:00 (before Shabbat)

Our Friday trip series continues with a visit to Herodion and Rachel’s Tomb. Herodion is the final resting place of King Herod the Great and offers a great look into what was happening in this area more than 2000 years ago.

The site offers a deeper look into the recently discovered mystery surrounding the king’s final resting place and one of his many architectural masterpieces. Herodian is located between Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the slopes of the Judean Desert and will allow us to get a more concrete geopolitical understanding of the area.

We will also visit one of the most contentious religious sites in the holy land: Rachel’s Tomb. This is an excellent way to understand the deep spiritual connection that multiple faiths feel towards the area and how the political situation has shaped the current status quo surrounding the site.

The site has been a contentious point between multiple faiths and nationalities over the years and sits directly over the security barrier from Bethlehem.

The area is famous for its array of fall-laden yellow Sterbergias – a beautiful flower that usually appears at this time of year. If the conditions allow, we will go on a short walk to search out these fall beauties!
