Difficulty Level: Intermediate
Trip Type:Hiking
Join Finjan for a day-hike at the Negev’s eastern edge as we explore the area around the Small Crater and hike from the Tamar Fort to the Gate of Ashmadai.
Our trip will begin near the Tamar Fort, a Roman fort from antiquity, which controlled a major stretch of the road between Be’er Sheva and the southern edge of the Dead Sea.
From there, we will descend via different paths used by local shepherds over the centuries towards the Tzafit Canyon and the Tzafit Spring. The Tzafit spring was an important and rare source of water deep in the depths of the eastern Negev.
After walking on the Israel National Trail, we will look upon the beautiful desert landscapes – including the Small Crater – from the top of the Hatzera Ascent. We will descend roughly 400m via this ancient route to the inner areas of the same crater which we saw from above.
Inside the crater, we will be surrounded by colored sands as we make our way to the Gate of Ashmadai and the point where the crater is drained by the Hatzera stream before meeting the bus and heading back to Tel Aviv.
Hike stats:
13 KM total hiking
400m ascending
830m descending
This is a classic intermediate hike and a wonderful way to start the desert hiking season before moving onto the more advanced and challenging routes!
