TRIP OVERVIEW

Mount Arbel and the cliffs around the western shores of the Sea of Galilee offer some of Israel’s most spectacular natural settings, vistas across the north of the country and historical intrigue as a place of refuge throughout the centuries. Our day will be spent exploring and hiking through some of these beautiful landscapes and gaining a more concrete understanding of what made this area of the Lower Galilee such a key part of both local and regional history.

From Jewish rebels seeking refuge in the days of Herod, to the great battles between Crusaders and Saladin and on to stronghold of the great Druze warrior Fakhr a-Din – this part of the Galilee served as a major crossroads for those looking to cement their power over the holy land.

Our day will begin by ascending Mount Arbel from the southeast. Here we will be blessed with beautiful views over the Sea of Galilee (weather permitting) and on to Mount Hermon, the Golan Heights and the limestone peaks of the Upper Galilee. After ascending the Arbel, we will wend our way down towards Wadi Hamam via the refuge caves high upon the cliffs upper edge.

Some of our descent will be on ladders dug into the mountain side. We will have a chance to ascend and explore the mountain fortress of the 17th century Druze strongman, Fakhr a-Din. The structure is under an impressive renovation now open to the public.

The hike is not long but has some some technical parts when descending the ladders. There is a 500m ascent to start the day – everyone can take it at their own pace.
