Join Finjan for our flagship hiking adventure to the breathtaking Mar Saba Monastery and Hyrcania Valley. We will trek through the biblical landscapes and deep ravines of Jerusalem’s desert. These areas have served early Christian monastics and pilgrims for more than 1500 years.
Between Jerusalem and Bethlehem in the Judean Wilderness lies the magnificent Mar Saba Monastery. It is one of three active monasteries that have been in continuous use since the early days of Christianity. The area sits on the edge of the mountainous and desert regions and is lush with wild flowers and pitch-green landscapes during the rainy season.
Mar Saba, founded by and named after Saint Sabbas in the 5th century, still houses a handful of monks who have chosen to follow a life of solitude and isolation within the refuge provided by the Judean Wilderness.
Our hiking route will also take us to the famous Mount Azazel – the highest peak in the area – and the Hyrcania Fortress deep in the Hyrcania Valley. It is in these deep valleys that legends come to life about the treasures of Jerusalem’s ancient temple.
This a is a full day of hiking (25KM in total) through the typical terrain of the Judean Desert. The is a semi-challenging day due to the distance.
